What counts as writing?
Hello darlings!
How the hell is everyone? No offense to March, but where the HELL did February go?!? You were just here bb and now you left us with MARCH?
I was recently asked: what do you count as writing?
Here's my list right now:
Writing
Reading new articles
Data cleaning
Plotting about to attend the first #MHAWS writing retreat (1 spot left!)
Opening a file on overleaf and staring at it for 15 fucking minutes
Goal setting
Finding code to make a fancy figure
Tracking down a new cite so you don't have to cite the asshole that everyone else cites
Fixing labels on that fucking figure
Brainstorming on a zoom call w coauthors
Reviewing an article that is directly relevant to one of your projects
Reviewing an article that isn’t directly relevant to one of your projects but gives you a great idea about framing
Reviewing an article that isn’t directly relevant but teaches you a lot about how to not write an article
Data analysis
Trying to fix labels on that figure, fucking it up, and going back to the original
Cursing a reviewer and then cursing myself when I figure out that they were right
Updating the table notes for 26 different tables in a book
Rereading an older article that you are *pretty sure* you remember but maybe not. Yep, definitely didn’t remember it.
Trying to find if a conference paper you saw in 2014 was every published, failing, and citing the conference paper
Thinking
Thinking about how you don't know shiiiit but you are going to keep trying
Thinking about your nemeses and how they suck
Considering how to take down the man
Getting an article formatted for submission
Looking up IRB project numbers
Going through your pre-submission checklist
Freaking out about submitting an article
Submitting an article
What writing can you do today?
XOXO
